Meet Torchy! Latest Magazine Highlights DNR Fire Mascot

MADISON – You probably know Bucky Badger from UW-Madison, Smokey Bear and maybe Bango, the Milwaukee Bucks mascot, all of whom originated in the mid- to late 20th century. But how about Torchy Timberloss? Conceived around 1950 from the imagination of DNR firefighters, Torchy initially made many appearances in fire prevention publications and posters before the concept ran its course and he disappeared. But now: Welcome back, Torchy!

The DNR recently revived Torchy, focusing his efforts on educating the public about fire safety and promoting the idea of “good fire,” planned low-intensity burns conducted by DNR fire crews and other trained practitioners to help ensure the health of certain ecosystems. Benefits include removing invading brush, decreasing leaf litter and dead grass (thatch), and promoting the growth of native, fire-dependent vegetation.

DNR staff are working to deploy Torchy as an ambassador, and you can learn his story in “Touching base with Torchy,” in the spring issue of Wisconsin Natural Resources magazine. You’ll also find a list of important tips to help prevent wildfires this spring, which is fire season in Wisconsin. Find the magazine’s latest digital edition online or get the print issue delivered.
