TOWNSEND – An ATV Safety Certification Course conducted by Red Arrow Snowmobile-ATV Club is scheduled for Saturday, May 16, 2026 from 9:00 am – 4:00 pm. The class will be held at the Townsend Town Hall located at 16564 Elm Street, Townsend. Each student who passes the exam will receive a free helmet from Lakewood Motorsports.
Anyone who operates an ATV on public riding areas—including trails, frozen waters, routes, and permitted county or forest lands—must have completed an ATV safety certification course if they are at least 12 years of age and were born on or after January 1, 1988.
Anyone who operates a UTV on public riding areas—such as trails, frozen waters, routes, and permitted county or forest lands—must have completed an ATV safety certification course if they are at least 16 years of age and were born on or after January 1, 1988.

Operators are required to carry their safety certification card at all times and must present it to law enforcement officers upon request.
Anyone is eligible to take the class and receive a safety education completion certificate. For children under 12 years of age, the certificate becomes valid once the child turns 12. Students with special needs should contact the instructor at least two weeks prior to the course to request special accommodation. Students should bring a lunch and drink for a break around noon.
The course emphasizes instruction on laws and regulations, ethics, personal safety, and the proper use of all-terrain vehicles.
