About the Artist: John Stano
John Stano is a singer-songwriter known for his distinctive blend of acoustic and slide guitar, impressive rack harmonica, expressive vocals, and thoughtful songwriting—a style he has refined through years of dedicated performance and study. Occasionally, he enhances his soundscape with mandolin or cigar box guitar, further enriching his musical palette. Stano’s music embodies elements of Folk, Americana, and Blues. While he began as a self-taught musician, he later pursued formal study of American fingerstyle guitar at the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music and learned harmonica under the guidance of national blues legend Jim Liban. He holds a B.A. in English and creative writing from U.W. Madison, and his skillful command of language brings originality and depth to his lyrics. Critics have praised Stano’s work: ‘Green Man Review’ likened his sound to early Bob Dylan, and ‘Dirty Linen’ found echoes of Country Joe McDonald. In addition to his original songs, Stano performs his own arrangements of works by renowned folk and Americana artists such as Bob Dylan, Steve Earle, John Prine, Gillian Welch, and Tom Waits, alongside country blues classics by icons like Robert Johnson, Mississippi John Hurt, and Bukka White. As a flexible and engaging performer, Stano is regularly featured at a variety of indoor and outdoor venues and has released four albums of original music.
