ARGONNE – USDA Wildlife Services verified that a wolf threatened two pet dogs at a property in the town of Argonne in Forest County on October 12, 2026. Auditory and visual deterrents were recommended as nonlethal measures to discourage further conflicts.
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources reminds dog owners to exercise caution in areas occupied by wolves, particularly when using dogs for hunting. Conflicts between wolves and hunting dogs are common during bear training and hunting seasons. Wolves have also attacked dogs pursuing foxes, coyotes, bobcats, rabbits, snowshoe hares and upland birds.
The DNR partners with USDA Wildlife Services to investigate reported wolf conflicts. An interactive map showing verified wolf depredation and threat incidents from 2013 to the present, along with individual investigation reports and damage payment information, is available at dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/WildlifeHabitat/wolf/maps.html.
Livestock producers who suspect a wolf or bear has attacked or is harassing their livestock should contact USDA Wildlife Services at 1-800-228-1368 in northern Wisconsin or 1-800-433-0663 in southern Wisconsin.
