GREEN BAY – Members of the Crooked Lake Volunteer Fire Department participated in the 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb at Lambeau Field on Saturday, September 12, 2026, honoring the firefighters and other first responders who lost their lives during the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

The stair climb offered participants a meaningful opportunity to remember the courage, sacrifice and selflessness shown by first responders on that tragic day. The Crooked Lake firefighters said the climb was physically demanding, but completing it in memory of their fallen fellow firefighters made the experience especially rewarding.

One of the most memorable moments came when the firefighters met a survivor of the attack. The man and his wife were on the 77th floor of the first World Trade Center tower when the plane struck. As they made their way down the stairwell to safety, they passed firefighters climbing upward toward the danger to help those who remained inside.

Hearing the survivor share his experience brought the events of 9/11 into even sharper focus for the Crooked Lake firefighters. The encounter served as a powerful reminder of the bravery displayed by the firefighters who continued climbing toward danger while helping thousands of people escape.

Meeting the survivor was a humbling experience that the participating firefighters said they will never forget. By completing the stair climb, they proudly carried forward the memory of the 343 New York City firefighters who died in the line of duty on September 11, 2001.

The annual memorial climb provides firefighters, first responders and community members with an opportunity to reflect on the lives lost, recognize the survivors and ensure that the extraordinary sacrifices made on 9/11 are never forgotten.
