LAKEWOOD – Local emergency responders and state officials are urging riders to use extra caution on a section of the Nicolet Recreation Trail after four separate UTV rollovers were reported in the same area.

The Lakewood Volunteer Fire Department, working with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, placed caution tape along a narrow stretch of trail between Rugg Lane and Village View Drive in Lakewood. Officials said the tape is meant to warn riders that the shoulder has eroded, leaving less room for vehicles to safely pass through the area.

The warning comes as many residents and visitors are expected to head outdoors for the Fourth of July weekend, a busy time for ATV and UTV traffic across northern Wisconsin. With more riders on trails and roads, officials are asking operators to slow down, stay alert and watch for changing trail conditions.

The Nicolet State Trail is a popular route for ATV and UTV riders, and public trail information notes that riders should remain on the trail and follow local and state rules while using the corridor.

While the caution tape is intended to draw attention to the damaged shoulder, riders should not rely on tape alone to identify hazards. Trail users are encouraged to reduce speed in the area, give other riders plenty of room and avoid the eroded shoulder whenever possible.

Officials also reminded riders to make safety a priority throughout the holiday weekend. That includes wearing proper safety gear, using seat belts where required, riding sober and making sure machines are being operated legally and responsibly.

Anyone traveling near Rugg Lane and Village View Drive should be prepared for the narrowed trail section and should share the warning with other riders. The goal, officials said, is to prevent additional rollovers and help everyone have a safe Fourth of July weekend.
