Communities across the country are taking time today to recognize the dedication, courage and sacrifice of the wildland firefighting community, honoring the men and women who help protect people, homes, forests, grasslands and natural resources from the threat of wildfire.
National Wildland Firefighter Day is observed each year on July 2. The observance was established in 2022 as a way to thank wildland firefighters and the many support personnel whose work is essential to wildfire response but is often less visible to the public.
Wildland firefighting is demanding work that can require long hours, difficult terrain, extreme heat, heavy smoke and time away from home. Crews may build fire lines, protect structures, operate equipment, coordinate aircraft, monitor changing weather conditions and help guide emergency response efforts as conditions shift.
The day also recognizes the broad team behind every wildfire response. Firefighters on the line are supported by dispatchers, map creators, equipment operators, radio technicians, aviation personnel, public information officers, prevention specialists, logistics teams and many others who help keep operations moving safely and effectively.
Those efforts are especially important as wildfire seasons continue to affect communities throughout the United States. In many areas, wildland fire response depends on cooperation among local, state, tribal and federal agencies, along with rural departments, contractors and emergency management partners.
For families and communities, National Wildland Firefighter Day is both a moment of appreciation and a reminder of the risks taken by those who answer the call. It is also a time to remember those who have been injured or lost their lives in the line of duty.
Today, residents are encouraged to thank not only the firefighters who respond to wildfires, but also the many people working behind the scenes to support them. Together, their service helps protect lives, property, communities and the natural places that define them.
