LAKEWOOD – The Northwoods Community Assistance Coalition (NCAC) is a non-profit volunteer social service organization. Headquartered in Lakewood, it was formed to meet a variety of social service needs in a historically underserved area of northeast Wisconsin. The 875 square mile service area includes parts of Northern Oconto County, Western Marinette County, Southern Forest County and Eastern Langlade County.
The NCAC is comprised of a six-person volunteer board of directors and approximately 50 other direct service volunteers. This past year, approximately 265 people benefited from NCAC services. Examples of these services include the following:
- Offering a “lending closet” where durable medical equipment can be obtained for use
- Providing rides to essential medical appointments
- Administering and helping to fund a community meal program
- Coordinating an in-home health care registry and providing resource referrals
- Assisting with tasks of daily living to help people remain in their homes
- Offering emergency financial assistance for fundamental needs such as utilities and food
- Helping with home improvements such as installing wheelchair ramps and grab bars
- Conducting monthly educational seminars and socialization opportunities
- Providing shoes, clothing and Holiday baskets to those in need
The NCAC is funded by grants from Wisconsin Public Service Foundation, The McCauslin Lions, The Wabeno Lions, the Ora Lea Bartels Foundation, M.G. Gille, Inc., Hidden Bear Trial ATV Club, St. Mary of the Lakes Christian Women, and the Pirates of the Northwoods. Other sources of operational revenue include fundraisers and private party donations. Private party donations can be made at the Laona State Bank, Lakewood Branch, or mailed to the NCAC at P.O.
