Protecting Our Waterways: The Importance of Healthy Lakes and Rivers

widnr 2026 02 11 850x445

The well-being of our lakes, rivers, shorelands, and wildlife is deeply interconnected. When one aspect of the ecosystem is affected, it can have far-reaching impacts on the others, highlighting the need for holistic approaches to environmental stewardship.

Natural shorelines play a vital role in supporting robust ecosystems. They help stabilize soil, intercept and filter stormwater runoff, and offer scenic beauty, making them essential for both environmental health and aesthetic value.

For more than a decade, the Healthy Lakes & Rivers program has worked to preserve the health of our state’s waters. The latest issue of the Wisconsin Natural Resources Magazine details the program’s achievements and provides practical recommendations for shoreline property owners to safeguard the waters and lands they inhabit.
