The holiday season is officially here, and many of us will begin to feel a mix of excitement and stress. Between festive preparations, social gatherings and gift-giving, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. Here are some ways to focus on what matters and enjoy a less-stressful holiday season:
- Pace yourself and, if needed, say no
There can be a lot of pressure to be at every gathering or event, but it’s important to not overcommit yourself. Try to spread out your visits or prioritize certain events. If you are feeling overwhelmed or an event doesn’t align with your priorities, it’s perfectly acceptable to graciously decline invitations. Remember, it’s your holiday time, too. - Shift the focus
Focusing on connection and shared experiences, rather than gifts, decorations and feasts, can help you maintain a healthy holiday mindset. A celebration doesn’t have to be elaborate to be meaningful. Reduce the stress on event hosts by asking for help — or offering it! - Budget with intention
Give yourself a reasonable budget for gifts, décor and food this season, and stick to it. Keep your focus to what works for you and your lifestyle and avoid comparing yourself to those around you. Your loved ones will appreciate the thought and effort you put into everything, not the amount you spent. - Remember: You don’t have to do everything!
If your holiday to-do list creates more stress than joy, consider paring it down. This might look like skipping the holiday card or turning your all-day baking fest into a shorter, more manageable session (or going with store-bought. Really, it’s OK!). Give yourself permission to tweak traditions or even skip a year if that’s what serves you. - Prioritize self-care
Giving to others is the theme for most holidays, but don’t forget to give a little to yourself. Make sure you are getting the appropriate amount of sleep, eating well, exercising and putting your physical and mental health first. A happy and healthy you is the best gift you can give to others. - Bonus tip: Help is available!
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, remember you’re not alone. Friends, family and many community resources are available for support. Whether it’s a listening ear, practical help or professional guidance, asking for help is a sign of strength, never weakness. Holidays can come with some ups and downs; support is here to get you through them.
By following these tips, you can create a more peaceful, enjoyable holiday experience for yourself and those around you. Together we can keep joy, connection and empathy at the center of the holidays.
