Finding the right care at the right time for post-holiday illness

clinic 2026 01 08

After weeks of holiday gatherings, it’s no surprise that respiratory illnesses are on the rise. As we all transition back to our routines, Emplify Health by Bellin wants to remind the community that there’s still time to protect yourself and others while finding the right care at the right time.

“The period following the holidays is when we typically see an uptick in respiratory cases such as influenza,” said Dr. Michael Hodulik, Emplify Health by Bellin Urgent Care Physician. “Between close contact during celebrations and the fluctuation of winter weather affecting our immune systems, our bodies become more vulnerable to illnesses such as a cold or influenza. The good news is that many cold and flu symptoms can be managed at home with over-the-counter medications, and it’s never too late to get your flu shot.”

When symptoms begin, it can be confusing to know if, when and where to seek care, but Emplify Health by Bellin is here to make it clearer. Individuals should connect with their primary care provider with the onset of symptoms, if possible. This connection (which can be done virtually or through messaging on the MyChart patient portal) can help people stay ahead of worsening symptoms and be directed to the appropriate path for care.

“Typically, a cold will last about 7 to 10 days while influenza can begin abruptly and linger for 5 to 7 days. When your symptoms persist longer than expected or include trouble breathing, swallowing, chest pain or fever, then it’s time for immediate action,” added Dr. Hodulik. “Since symptoms like to go in overdrive outside of business hours, Emplify Health by Bellin has made sure options are available to find the right care at the right time.”

When needing further care for your cold and flu symptoms, including outside business hours, check out these Emplify Health by Bellin locations:

  • FastCare: walk-in location reserved for treating flu or cold symptoms such as cough or sore throat. COVID and flu vaccines are also available through FastCare.
  • Fastlane: drive-through option for testing COVID, flu and strep. Available for collecting nasal and throat swabs or blood draws and vaccinations for influenza or COVID 19.
  • Urgent Care: when you can’t meet with your primary care provider but still require assessment for your cold or flu symptoms.
  • Emergency Department: reserved for immediate medical problems such as difficulty breathing, chest pain or other potentially life-threatening symptoms.

“Staying on top of your symptoms can help reduce the spread to others and get you better faster. And remember, there is no deadline to get your flu shot,” added Dr. Hodulik.

Having a primary care provider can help you get ahead of cold and flu symptoms so more urgent forms of care are not needed. Check in with your provider when symptoms begin through Emplify Health MyChart or by scheduling an in-person or virtual appointment.
