A group of local paddling enthusiasts is celebrating 14 summer seasons of exploring area lakes and streams, gathering each Thursday evening for time on the water, fellowship and a shared love of the outdoors.

Led by Dick Kendall, informally known as the group’s “Paddle-Commander,” the paddlers begin their season in early May and continue through mid-September. A schedule is shared electronically before the first outing. Most summers include about 18 planned paddles, though some members continue into October and even early November.
Participants include men and women of a range of ages and experience levels. Some paddle kayaks, others use canoes, two members ride stand-up paddle boards, and another brings a craft equipped for fishing. Launch time is 5:00 pm each Thursday. The group typically spends about 1¼ hours on the water before heading to a local establishment for food, beverages and conversation.
Three times each summer, the paddlers also hold a picnic at a lake with tables, shelter and restroom facilities. Many members have participated for the full 14 years, and the group is known for its courteous spirit, with paddlers helping one another load, unload and launch their craft. Weekly participation usually ranges from 20 to 30 people, depending on the weather. Anyone interested in joining may email dick.kendall920@gmail.com to request a schedule.
