WABENO – The Wabeno Area Players will perform a readers’ theater of the comedy, The Pie Ladies, outside the historical Wabeno Public Library on Friday, June 26 at 5:00 pm.
The Pie Ladies, for the eleventh year in a row, are baking two dozen pies for the church fundraising dinner. The Pie Ladies feel the pressure of competition from the Cake and Brownie Ladies. Their first challenge is to decide if they should create different pies, namely apple bourbon and chocolate rum, or stick with the traditional, old standbys of apple, blueberry and cherry.
Though hard at work, the attention of the six ladies drifts to thoughts of the best parts of life. Much to the dismay of their pastor and the possible new choir director, they decide to form their own country where they could live a simple life with the best of the past and the future.
They consider a name for their country, what a constitution would be like, and how life could be better. The comedy intensifies when a reporter from the local newspaper ditches coverage of their pie making talents and reports on their thoughts and possible actions. Though completely innocent, the Pie Ladies are unaware that their ideas may be illegal. Oops!!!
The Pie Ladies is written by Sherry Piros and is directed by Carol Bartlein. The Wabeno Public Library is located at 4556 N Branch Street.
