RIVERVIEW – The Riverview Fire Department reminds us that fire risk increases as snow melts. In much of Wisconsin, a free DNR burning permit is required for outdoor burning. These permits help ensure safe burning and protect people, property, and natural resources from wildfires.
Steps to Safe Burning
- Get a Permit: You can obtain a free burning permit instantly online with your email address. Alternatively, you may call the hotline at 1-888-WIS-BURN (947-2876) between 7:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. daily to request a permit be mailed to you.
- Check Before Burning: On the day you wish to burn, check the daily burning restrictions after 9 a.m. by selecting the county where you plan to burn. Fire conditions can change rapidly, so it is important to check restrictions each day to find out if burning is allowed, the permitted hours, and any size limitations.
- Follow the Rules: Always adhere to the daily burning restrictions and fire safety recommendations listed on your permit. Be sure to have all necessary tools to keep your fire contained. Finally, ensure your fire is completely extinguished before leaving the area.
